Anwar is a movie, that tries to showcase world's increasing paranoia in the post 9/11 era. It is a story of a desperate and sensitive artist hiding in the dark confines of an age-old and forgotten temple, he has nothing to do with the world but still everything for him changes when this Muslim boy hiding in a temple is declared to be a terrorist without any reason. He wakes up to find that life is not as easy even if one is left with no desire to live. Some political leaders, a senseless, always ready-to-clap crowd and byte hungry media play a major role in deciding the fate of this young man. With this kind of a theme it would not be wrong for a viewer to expect a very poignant and a sensitive movie. But instead Anwar turns out to be a senseless story with a mix of other stories thrown together. A director who surprised us with a movie like Mathrubhoomi one was waiting with the eager eyes for a next blaster.
Siddharth Koirala has tried to play the softhearted and a dreamy Anwar but obviously he could not do much as the dialogues and screenplay play were nowhere near good. Mehroo (Nauheed Cyrusi) is the love of Anwar's life. She represents the modern woman, who is desperate to carve her life according to her own wishes. Throughout the film she struggles with the idea of love only with a desire to live a better living. Manisha Koirala as Anita has been an absolute waste of a character. She is reduced to cover all the bizarre situations and is all the time desperate to have a control on her personal life. Master Pasha (Vijay Raaz) has been made to play the role of a sadistic comedian. His talent has been a complete waste in the movie. Udit (Hiten Tejwani) as Anwar's closest friend has acted well. There is an SP (Yashpal Sharma) who is frustrated with his duties and family tragedies. Rajpal Yadav is a paranoid and mad character but his is the only character that seems right in the otherwise silly narrative. He symbolizes the madness of the world with the terrorists.

The Movie is based on Priyamvad's short story ‘Phalgun Ki Ek Upkatha'. Anwar (Siddharth Koirala) is a student of MA. He is madly in love with Mehroo (Nauheed Cyrusi), but Mehroo loves Anwar's best friend Udit (Hiten Tejwani). Mehroo and Udit try to elope, but Anwar informs Mehroo's family. Mehroo's Uncles kill Udit and unable to cope up with the situation Mehroo commits suicide. With the death of Mehroo Anwar's dream world starts to crumble. He feels responsible for the death of his best friend and lover. In a desperate move he starts an unknown journey and ends up in a temple. When he wakes up he finds that he has been declared a terrorist by the world outside. Politicians and media try to cash in on the situation without bothering to spare a thought about Anwar. They don't care whether the person is innocent.Though the story of Anwar is very genuine and real, yet there is a strong feeling of disappointment while watching the movie. It is indeed a demise of a beautiful idea and that is what hurts you the most. Film fails in every account and has been unnecessarily stretched. Actors like Vijay Raaz and Yashpal Sharma are reduced to inconsequential with shallow and predictable dialogues

Coming to the music of the film, well, it is largely disappointing except for the song ‘Maula Mere' and ‘Javeda Zindagi' numbers, which are soft and mesmerizing. In a movie, which deals with such a sensitive issue, you cannot afford to have predictable dialogues that are repetitive and hyperbolic. Sometimes they turn a serious situation into a comic one. Problem in Manish Jha's direction is that he tried to show everything without concentrating on the main story. The camera focuses on the crowd though there is no relevance of it. Anwar's agony and struggle remain hidden from the eyes of viewers. Even Anwar's death also fails to evoke any sympathy in the viewer's heart.
In the end we are left with a wondering mind at the fact that what did the director actually want out of the movie. Did he want to show the pathetic situation of Muslims in India? Was it a love story? Or did he try to show the world after 9/11? The thoughts behind Anwar remain unclear and confusing and that is the tragedy of Anwar. It was never going to be successful on the box office. To be precise and to round up the whole movie the result is disastrous. |
