Don vs Don, is not what you guys are expecting…

The New Don of Farhan Akhtar is a Shah Rukh Khan movie all the way. But if you are going to see this Don in the expectation of a better and grand version of the old Amitabh Bachchan’s Don then disappointment is definitely in store for you. Though a big hit, the movie just fails to put a chill in you. What movie lacks in particular is the passionless performances by the lead roles like Shahrukh and Priyanka Chopra. The pace of the movie is so slow, especially the middle part of it can for sure make you go off to a nice sleep. Whether the film is a replica of the old Don is debatable. In the first half of the movie, Farhan loyally sticks to the original script. The movie carried similar names and identical dialogues that eternized Amitabh Bachchan once. One can even find a slight imitation in Shah Rukh Khan’s acting. Whether it is difficult to improvise the perfectionist Amitabh or just a lack of originality is up to the audience to decide. Farhan Akhtar has come up with a sleek and stylish tribute to the original Don. All decked up with cityscape of Kuala Lumpur, Paris and India with the state-of-the-art technology and a sappy taste in fashion, the new Don is just like an Indian James Bond.

The movie opens in Paris with Don, who is all dressed in black, striking a cocaine deal. Shahrukh with his smug gait, arrogant poise and sharp looks gives the desirable appearance of Don. But as soon as Don changes into Vijay, the difference is lost. The variation in dialogue delivery between the two characters is completely missing. If we shift our focus to the side characters, then Boman Irani has done a good job. Priyanka Chopra needs to learn more on how to impress the audience with her stunts. Arjun Rampal is as dashing as ever and is quite convincing in the role of the limping Jasjit, though one can definitely not compare him with Pran. Isha Koppikar has just got lost in the movie. We don’t miss her at all. Om Puri’s role for sure deserved a better plot. The music of the film is good. It is lively and stylish. But once more when it comes to the song ‘Khaike paan banarswala’...’ we miss Amitabh’s implausible performance. The best numbers are ‘ye mera dil…’ and ‘mein hu don…’.

There is a surprise package for the audience towards the end of the movie. Unlike the older version of winning of good against evil, the newer version ends on the note ‘Don ko pakrana mushkil nahi namumken hain..’
