Malamaal Weekly is an out and out comedy film. A must watch those who are craving to go malamaal with fun and hearty laughs. After a long pause, we have a film not casting mainstream bigwigs yet powerful performances can be seen on the rocks and a box office hit to its credit.
The story revolves around Lilaram (Paresh Rawal) who sells lottery tickets in a village stricken with drought, poverty and a blood-sucking miser 'Thakurain" (Sudha Chandran) With "Koi Mil Gaya" the trend of super special effects started in India and with "Krrish" Bollywood would only encourage the directors to do some more experiments. It gives a new dimension to the film and definitely a treat to movie goers, who are anyways getting accustomed to these graphics via TV. However, unlike "Koi Mil Gaya" this film lacks the charm and magic of Jadu, the soul of the original flick. But to compensate that here is Hritik Roshan with a great performance. Rekha is another star performer in the film. But, for those who love Rekha to remain a glam doll, the character may not be a fanciful one. But she has certainly moved a notch higher by donning the mettle of grandmother. Rekha has done the role of grandmother with absolute brilliance. |

Paresh Rawal as always, brilliant and breaths life into the character of…Om Puri and Rajpaal Yadav have given a fine performance and made the viewers hold their stomach and roll over on their chairs. And one dare not forget Baje's hair flicks, Anthony's dying expression and Asrani's flight to the top of his elephant every time Om Puri comes near him. While viewing certain scenes, your mind on an automated version starts capturing shades of "Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro"
Malamaal Weekly is a clean, enjoyable film with some real big time comedy and an innovative script. The direction is tight and nowhere does the movie seem to be lagging behind. But still, if only what Priyadarshan could have avoided, only if he could have avoided, were the ugly teeth of Paresh Rawal. All and all, a must watch for a Sunday afternoon or a late weekday night to balance out the stressful and hectic life, with clashing family and work schedules. A comedy with a potential to match the timeless classic, "Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro".
