Amitabh Bachhan

Amitabh Bachhan1970s was a phenomenal decade for the Indian society with new developments rocking the political, social and cultural status quo of India. This changing scenario found adequate representation in the Hindi films and this period saw the meteoric rise to fame of a talented and multi faceted actor, Amitabh Bachhan. The ‘shahenshah’ of the mainstream Hindi cinema, Amitabh Bachchan or Big B, is undoubtedly the most recognized face of Indian popular cinema all over the world. The towering presence of this over six feet personality is revered for taking popular Hindi cinema to a new height. Born on October 11th, 1942 to the respected Hindi poet, Harivansh Rai Bachhan and the socialite Teji Bachhan, Amitabh had earned a bachelor’s degree from the Delhi University. He then tried his luck in the films and after a brief tryst with a couple of flops; Amitabh became the most successful superstar, delivering at least one big hit every year. With some of the biggest hits like Sholay, Deewar under his belt, this megastar has carved a niche for himself in the history of Indian cinema.
Amitabh’s Acting Career
Amitabh began his acting career in 1969 with ‘Saat Hindustani’. The film however did little for his career as Amitabh’s performance in this film as a Muslim poet went largely unnoticed. ‘Anand’, released in 1972, announced the birth of a talented actor to the world. His performance opposite of Rajesh Khanna was critically acclaimed and Amitabh went on to win a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award. But the real boost for his career came with Prakash Mehra’s ‘Zanjeer’. This film is noteworthy for another reason. It signified a complete shift from the prevalent romantic films to action films. Amitabh’s intense acting in this cops and robbers melodrama gave rise to the angry young man syndrome. The youths found in Amitabh the personification of their anger which was caused by turmoil in politics, rise of unemployment and increasing disillusionment with the system. The box office success of ‘Zanjeer’ was followed by other hits like:
  • Deewar (1975)
  • Sholay (1975)
  • Trishul (1978)
  • Kaala Patthar (1979)
Achievements:
Since his debut in 1969, Amitabh has come a long way with more than 70 films to his credit. He has received innumerable awards. Some of them are:
  • Best Newcomer for Saat Hindustani (1970)
  • Best Actor for Agneepath (1991)
  • Best Actor for Black (2005)
He even started his production company which was the official host of the ‘Miss Universe’, held in Bangalore in 1996. He, for a very short time, had been into politics. Having won from Allahabad on Congress ticket, he was elected as a member of the Parliament. However, owing to scandals implicating him, he quit his Parliament seat and vowed never again to return to politics. This phenomenal film actor has set such acting standard that many regard as a benchmark for judging any actor’s acting prowess.
