| Dilbagh Singh |
Amidst the insurgence of varied kinds of Punjabi music on television
channels, there can be seen a singer who claims to be far away from the
clutter. Dilbagh Singh has recently launched his album titled 'Oh Tina'
released by Revolutionary Forever Audio comprising eight original tracks.
With this album, Dilbagh Singh brings out a collection, which is not
beating the same old path of Punjabi music. It has some newness in it,
making it a right choice for music lovers. Album starts with the title
track 'Oh Tina' composed by Aditya and written by Mika and Dilbagh,
continues with techno-style 'Geda', and then comes 'Channa' composed by
Sachin Gupta (Doorie fame) and the list goes on. The unique title of the
album has taken birth out of Dilbagh's personal love-life experiences.
Singer credited for the rap of the superhit composition 'Ganpat' from the
film 'Shootout at Lokhandwala', opened his heart for the viewers of

Why did you choose the title 'Oh Tina' for your debut album? |
| Dilbagh: It is a catchy title and also the title and the title song speak
for my personal life experiences. |
|
Please tell us about your experience that made you dedicate your debut
album to it. |
| Dilbagh: Well! I was seriously engaged with five girls – Tina, Sweety,
Daisy, Ruby and Preeti. They all doubted my calibre as a singer. When it
came to marriage, their parents would question my capabilities stating
that singing is not a professional career. I have dedicated this album to
these girls showing them that I can be successful – something that they
never believed.
|
How come out of the five girls in your life you have chosen Tina for
your title? |
| Dilbagh: I was about to get married to her. |
Since your album has been released, did you hear back from any of the
five girls? |
| Dilbagh: Yes! I have received their email responses on what they think
about my debut album. Some have said that I did very wrong by mentioning
them in my song while others have said that I did the correct thing and
admitted their mistakes. All I wanted to tell them through my album was
that one should recognize talent instead of underestimating anybody. All
of them had tried in some way or the other to demoralize me but it did not
happen. I had the strength to look beyond their negativities.
|
Were these girls the only discouragement in your life? |
| Dilbagh: My father was also not approving of my singing career. |
How come you did not put that element in any of your songs? |
| Dilbagh: My father always said to me "If you get into singing, what will
we say when it is time for your marriage?" He never took me to any
occasions with him saying that I would be an insult to him. But now, he
feels very proud of me and takes me along everywhere whenever he can.
Recently, he revealed to me his secret. He also was fond of singing in his
childhood years but his father was not very pleased with it. He has also
written a song – old style – which I intend to sing some time soon. I will
dedicate the song to my father. |
So how have you used your past experiences in this album? |
| Dilbagh: The theme of this album is really strange. Going into the
flashback, I wrote the title song 'Oh Tina' while traveling on a plane. I
have described all the five girls in this song since all of them had
something special in them. Daisy danced really well and Sweety always
refuted my goals. Ruby had beautiful eyes while Preeti used to whistle in
different styles. Tina and I were seriously committed. |
You claim that this album is very different from the usual Punjabi
compilations. How? |
| Dilbagh: Whenever a new album is released, almost all the songs in it are
quite similar and lack variety. In these kinds of albums, people usually
like two or three songs and never listen to the rest. I wanted to do a
variety. The music director told me to create a song on real life so Mika
and I created the Tina song. The song 'Channa' is a love song based on
Latin music while 'Sat Samunder Paar' is filmy-style sad song. Then there
are techno-styles compilations, dancing numbers and a hip-hop dhol style
song. 'Nacchna Kamaal' is a UK-based song. Thus, I have created an album
with a lot of diversity in the songs. I wanted to do something exceptional
whether it becomes a hit or a flop. I do not want to tag myself as a
Punjabi singer, I would rather be happy as a western singer. I want to
create my name through versatility.
|
How did you get to work with Mika? |
| Dilbagh: I have professionally been with Mika even before the release of
his debut album 'Sawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag.' We have been neighbours, and
share a good friendship. Whenever we played cricket together, he used to
bring his guitar along in the field. I always wanted to learn from him but
he said it will cease the friendship we have and create a teacher-student
relationship. I have learned a lot from him. I have done more than 400
shows with him and about 375 solo shows by myself. |
What do you have to say about the Punjabi music industry becoming more
of a clutter these days? |
| Dilbagh: Punjabi music industry had been always open to all. These days
people see singing as a glamorous and easy profession. I have not slept
for past many days. There might be glamour in this profession but it is a
very hard job. Only those new singers are stable who have worked
sincerely. |
Tell us about your present love life. |
| Dilbagh: I don't think anyone will refuse me now. Love life is very much
active. However, I want to cash the time and pay attention to my career. |
