Review By:Ashwani Kumar Singh
With the rising aspirations among the young Indians of going abroad and owning of a world of theirs, making a film on this theme is gaining currency day by day. And, Vipul Shah's Namaste London is just another product in the same category. After his commendable debut 'Aankhein' and hit 'Waqt', it was time for 'Namastey London' to jump on to the theatres. Shah seems to be a completely loyal to his favourite star Akshay Kumar but this time he has paired him with elegant Katrina Kaif, who does boogie woogie dance on desi Punjabi tunes. Extensive media promotions and super hit songs like 'chakna chakna', Rabba rabba' and melodious 'Virania' have helped it to register some 'House full' banners at theatres. Despite all talks of liking and disliking, Himesh Reshamiya has once again given a great performance by composing hit songs first time on the lyrics of Javed Akhtar.
Start of the film is very conventional, portraying how an NRI girl gets rid of a marriage proposal with guest actor Ritesh Deshmukh. 'Jazz' alias Jasmeet (Katrina Kaif) who is a UK born girl and her Indian father Manmohan (Rishi Kapoor) and mother (Nina Wadia) make all kinds of efforts for her daughter's marriage to an Indian guy. But somehow they are not successful in doing so. Jazz is in love with an english guy Charlie (Clyde Stenden) who is her boss in the office. At the same time there is also a story line of Imran (Upen Patel) - the hot guy who is playing a role of a Pakistani boy wants to marry an English girl at any cost. Director has tried to portray the present tussle between modern day children and the traditional parents having a feeling of agony of being an Indian abroad. Katrina has performed to the best of her potential and this time she has proved to do well in Bollywood. Her acting as well as Desi dancing is really cool. Upen Patel has tried to perform well. This time he also got an opportunity to show his acting skills than his usual body show.
Meanwhile, as the story progresses Rishi manages a trip to India with his daughter and tries to search some suitable Dulha for her, but unfortunately he fails. Finally, he comes to his hometown in Punjab, where the Macho Man Arjun (Akshay Kumar) makes his dashing entry on his Bullet motorcycle in the film, dressed up in a typical Jatt costumes exclusively designed by fashion designer Rocky S. Arjun falls in love with angrezi Jasmeet at first sight. Once again Akshay has counted all his credit on his best-timed dialogue delivery skill and supportive humorous facial expressions.
Cinematography of the film is simply exceptional. Both interior and exterior scenes are attractive and catchy, whether it's of lovely London or of lush green cane farms of Punjab. The director has successfully displayed the real feel of a Punjabi village featuring an extra long family consisting of a lovely bebe. It's the time for old friends to change their friendship into a relationship. In the style of 'Chat mangni te pat bya' Jazz gets engaged to Arjun, but manages to convince him to celebrate their honeymoon in London where she straight-forwardly refuses to get married to him. Now the main plot of the movie is revealed with an Indian husband (Arjun) who hardly knows a word of English struggles to win back his wife from her English boyfriend. In between there are few scenes like a rugby match and an Indian dance at a London disco, which reminds us of Manoj Kumar's acclaimed movie 'Purab aur Paschim'.
Though it is a complete Indian masala package, the end is not as impressive. However, the presentation is quite commendable. The film is well balanced with appropriate humour and emotions. The audiences found the 'Funjabi' boy, Akshay entertaining in his own distinct style but at the same time, they missed something from his part portrayed in the movie, as he did not do much of a comedy. The chemistry of the actors is well matched. The film seems to be cashing in on the early exit of India from the world cup as depressed audiences search for a light entertainer. Namastey London has had a good start at the box office and no doubt the director Vipul Shah would be praying to sustain the response for a few more days.
