Experiment is the latest fad in Bollywood, new directors are trying to move out of the tried and tested formula movies. The latest movie in the experimental genre is Sanjay Khandoori's 'Ek Chalis Ki Last Local'. It is the story of the Maximum city Mumbai. Everything is extreme about this city, this is why ordinary people come to the city to make it big in life. Sanjay has the quality of a great storyteller, he tries to unravel the magic, mystic and the dark underbelly of the city through his movie. Khandoori's narration starts well but somewhere between the narration it starts to lose the magic and enters into a chaos and confusion. Sadly, It had all the qualities of a great dark comedy and satire on Mumbai but it turns out to be another time pass movie with a half baked story. The movie is good in pieces as it lacks integrity and proper connectivity. Abbay Deol and Neha have given good performances but movie would have done better if it had a good editing. Khandoori seems to have borrowed many things from the typical gangster movies of Bollywood. But that is not what one expects from a movie which claims to be fresh. Some scenes in the movie are bizarre and need to be cut from the movie. |

The story begins with Nilesh (Abbahy Deol), a call centre employee, who misses his last local and due to a bomb blast in the city all auto rickshaws are on strike. He can not take any taxi as he has only seventy rupees in his pocket. Soon he bumps into Madhu (Neha Dhupia) who has also missed her last local. Both of them are stranded at the station and they have two and half hours to spend before they catch the first local. They decide to spend their night in a local bar. The story takes an unexpected turn from here. Nilesh gets involved with mafia and through them he gets involved in extortion, gambling, kidnapping, prostitution, encounter and gang wars. From there on his life starts changing tracks, sometimes it is on fast track and sometimes it is on slow track. The story gets unbelievable, as so many things happen just in two and half hours. Nilesh wins loads of money and eventually he lands in trouble with the gangster. A ruthless gang war follows and there are many senseless killings. Nilesh gets the surprise of his life when he comes to know that the sweet girl with him is not a damsel in distress but actually a prostitute. Well, his adventures or misadventures are not bad as he walks away with two and half crores in simply two and half hours and a beautiful girl in the end. |

Abbhay Deol's (Nilesh) acting has a very natural quality. He fits very well in the character of a middle class guy, who works in a call centre and who wants to earn big money. The utter confusion and boyish charm on his face makes him adorable in the movie. His monologues are quick, situational, dramatic and beautifully executed in the movie. Neha(Madhu) is also good in her acting, her transformation from an innocent middle class girl to a prostitute is amazing. She has convincingly played the character. . Other characters in the movie fail to impress you much except for Vijay Apte(Punnapa) and Malvankar(Inspector) who are great in their brief roles. Dialogues and catchy one liners are the lifeline of the movie and that is what makes it a watchable experience as there is no story to hold you back. They lend support to the theme of the movie as it is entirely based on incidences. 'Ek Chalis Ki Last Local' was never meant to be a musical wonder, yet the director has added some songs to make matters worse as there was no much scope for songs in the movie. They spoil the rhythm and pace of the movie. However, two songs need a special mention. One is the promotional song of the movie, 'Kya hua jo laree chhuti' which is more or less inspired viewers to watch the movie. It is already on the top of music charts. Second song 'Ekka Chauka' is also good and has been knitted well with the speed of the story. Despite its flaws 'EK Chalis Ki Last Local' can be rated as one time watch. |
