Anurag Basu an extremely talented director and incredible storyteller has proved himself for the third time. After the great hit of ‘Murder' and ‘Gangster', ‘Metro' is turning out to be another hit The characters are linked in such a way that it does not seem to be over done, like in other multiple story Hindi films, Salaam-e-ishq, Honeymoon Travels, etc. In this film he has shown the complexities of a relationship, the shortcuts one adopts in life to attain the goals and the corrosion of ethics and values have been presented most convincingly. The culmination of a few stories, besides the unique concept of using the ‘Metro Band' in every song, has surely made this film different from others.

The story is about, Shilpa Shetty (Shikha) who's married to Kay Kay Menon (Ranjeet) and has a six year-old daughter. They had decided that she should stay back at home and take care of the house and the kid. While, Ranjeet would work, earn money and success and during all this he forgets his family somewhere on the way because of which bitterness and boredom crept into their relationship. Soon he finds a new start of life with Neha. Kangna Ranaut (Neha), a smart young woman who has climbed the ladder in a very short time, and hard work is not the only secret. The reason of quick growth and promotion is her boss, Ranjeet (Kay Kay Menon), who likes her and is willing to do anything she asks for but can't commit getting tied for a marriage. Sharman Joshi (Rahul) works as a call centre executive in Mumbai. He silently loves this girl Neha.

Ignored by her husband and stuck by family responsibilities, Shikha soon gets attracted to Shiny Ahuja (Akash), a struggling theatre artist whose wife divorced him because she could not stand his failures. Akash and Shikha's love blossoms and she get emotionally attached to him. Shikha was learning classical dance from Nafisa Ali (Vaijanti) and takes her as her mother. She lives in an old age home, 40 years ago she loved a man who chose his career and left his first love. That man is Dharmendra (Amol) who returns to India after 40 years, to spend the last few days of his life with his first love, Vaijanti. Shikha's sister and Neha's room mate Konkona Sen Sharma (Shruti) works at Radio station. She is in her 30s and is desperate to get married. She strongly feels for her RJ, Gautam Kapoor (Wishy K) who's a gay and she does not know that till she finds him sleeping with their boss. She also meets Irrfan Khan (Debu) through a matrimonial site. She dislikes him but Debu does not carry the same feeling for her.
Anurag Basu's handling of a few dramatic and emotional moments is amazing. Dharmendra's introduction at the railway station, the tense moments between Kay Kay and Shilpa, the emotional attachment between Dharmendra and Nafisa Ali, the entire track featuring Irrfan and Konkona Sen Sharma, Sharman Joshi’s compromises on his self respect and the sequence when Shiney and Shilpa are about to get physical, are few scenes that register a strong impact. Also, the handling of the multiple stories simultaneously is praiseworthy, not for once does the confusion prevail since so much is happening to so many characters. On the other hand, few stories looked hurried and half-baked. The climax to the Shilpa - Kay Kay story is idiotic. Shilpa is about to leave her home when the doorbell rings and she finds her husband (Kay Kay) looking at her with apology on his face. He seems ashamed and one can assume that he has returned home as Neha has dumped him. And surprisingly, Shilpa goes back to the heartless husband, and says goodbye to Shiney, who genuinely loves her. It shouldn’t have been this way it’s an unwanted ending.
’Metro’ is dramatized with master performances by Shilpa, Kay Kay Menon, Irrfan and Konkona contending for top honors. Shilpa has delivered her finest performance. Kay Kay Menon is exceptional, he acts so well and so fine that it’s hard to understand its real or reel. Actor Irrfan Khan surely is the life of the drama. You're bound to run out of words to describe his performance. Konkona’s compliments for Irrfan in the film are beautifully said. Experient actor Dharmendra is simply superb. He makes you moist-eyed at several places. Sharman Joshi plays his character beautifully. Kangna Ranaut has got a good makeover but that would never teach her acting skills, she has to work hard for that. Shiny Ahuja like always is incredible. He deserved a few more scenes. Nafisa Ali is a gracile beauty. On the whole, Metro couldn't have been a worth watching without The Metro Band and a good connectivity between characters.
