It seems that the Hindi cinema industry has entered a new era, an era where there is something for everyone, which includes kids too. The success of ‘Hanuman’ was perhaps the turning point for the film industry. Though there have been instances of using animation in Hindi films, but the patience for making an animated child oriented film was not explored in this way before. Thus a film like 'My friend Ganesha' was a share pleasure to watch, though I being an adult it did not interest me much but when you watch it from the perspective of a child then it is definitely a good job. Like ‘Hanuman’, in ‘My Friend Ganesha’ also the director has tried to blend mythological characters with the real characters and there is that additional Bollywood spice too to make it more interesting. Well in both the movies the makers have done a nice job to present the old age epics in a trendy way which is become easy for the kids to absorb than ever before. |

The film has a very simple story line. It tells about a kid- a loner, who looks at a housemaid to be his companion as he is denied the same from his classmates and from parents too. The story revolves around the family of this lonely kid Ashu (Ahsaas Channa), his busy parents, a college going aunt, a housemaid and of course lord Ganesha. Ashu’s school mates were more of a terror for him than being friends. On the other hand he failed to get the requisite attention of his parents who are obsessed with their own lives. As a result he finds a mate in his house maid (Gangutai) who would not only take care of his needs but also posed as a guardian in his school. When Ashu tells her how he saved the life of a mouse, Gangutai explains the story of Ganesha and Mushikraj to him. Ashu then tells her that he feels lonely and on that Gangutai advises him to bring Ganesha home. And with this Ganesha becomes Ashu’s friend. Meanwhile, the family gets into all sorts of problems and the way out seems invisible. And this is where Ganesha comes in picture and solves all the problems. This incident makes Ashu's busy parents realise their mistakes and with the result they become more caring and God- loving. The movie is a big moral for the kids for sure. |

Though the film is too simple but appears absolutely fine as the main target audience is primarily the kids. Most importantly the film has some inherent messages for both kids and adults, which otherwise are taken for granted. The main moral is for the busy parents who often forget about their duty towards their kids and leave them often to the mercy of maids. The director Rajiv S Ruia has done a fairly good job though the child artist in the leading role Ahsaas (as Ashu) is far from his acting best, as compared to other child artists like Swini Khara in the movie ‘Chinikum’. The music is fair, the title song as well as an Aarti towards the end are nice. Animation too is all right but in the era of Cartoon Network and Animax the film has very slim chance to make a mark of its own. Though the film is average and on top of it the timing of its release (especially when the schools are open and the Box office is full of some high profile releases) will affect it more adversely. |
