‘Naqaab’ is a story of love, betrayal and vengeance. It tells the story of a young girl from a middle-class family engaged to a millionaire. But later she is attracted to a young struggling actor and with this she also shifts the object of her affection. The Bollywood doctors of thrillers and suspense, Abbas-Mustan have delivered many a thriller for Bollywood viewers including movies like 'Aitraaz', and 'Ajnabee', but 'Naqaab' somewhat falls short of expectations. The storyline of the movie lacks originality but tries to package old wine in a new bottle. Speaking to a couple of moviegoers on their reaction about the film, the response was somewhat lukewarm. “I expected something new, but it was the same old story line just with a few new elements”, a college student reacted. In short, 'Naqaab' has fallen short of the standard of expectations that brothers Abbas-Mustan had set. In addition to the regular triangle involving love, betrayal and vengeance, the movie also focuses for sometime on the shady past on each of the three main characters.

Sophie (Urvashi Sharma), a new entrant is a young delivery girl for a burger outlet, engaged to Karan Khanna (Bobby Deol). Everything goes well until she meets Vicky Malhotra (Akshaye Khanna) a young struggling actor. Urvashi falls in love with Vicky and carries on this relationship without the knowledge of Karan. When Karan finally comes to know of this relationship the story takes a twist, which forms the climax. Perhaps the main problem lies in its extremely slow narration and not enough twists. At the very beginning of the movie, viewers can guess who is cheating on whom and who will end up being the victim. 'Naqaab' breaks the promise of being one of the most fascinating thrillers of the year. Various camera movements, stills and cuts, give an indication that there is something shady in the past of each of the characters but the storyline fails to do justice. 'Naqaab' is loosely based on 'Humraaz' and strongly inspired from Sting's hit song, 'I'll be watching you'. This is because throughout the movie, Vicky is busy secretly recording all of Sophie's movements.

'Naqaab' was advertised with the tagline, 'the most shocking thriller of the year', however, till the end the movie fails to achieve that rush of adrenaline normally associated with thrillers. The movie ends with one of the characters murdering another and vengeance is complete. When all the questions are answered the viewers invariably find the answers falling far behind expectations. None of the reasons seem to justify the events. Model turned debutant actor, Urvashi Sharma gives a good performance and looks good too. The directors restrict Bobby Deol to a limited role and, in his defence, Bobby gets a limited space to exhibit his acting skills. Akshaye Khanna plays a 'romanticist with a twist' to the hilt, serenading Urvashi on Dubai streets. Pritam Chakraborty directs the music and he harness the combined talents of Javed Ali, Sonu Nigam, Alisha Chinoy and Sunidhi Chouhan. The movie has 3 songs with different remix versions taking the tally to 8. However, only one song deserves particular mention. “Ek din teri Raahon” is by far the best song in the movie; the rest are not up to the mark.
