Saawariya ReviewTalk about magnificent sets and aestheticism on the big screen and you cannot help but think of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Be it Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam or Devdas. With Saawariya, Bhansali has come up with yet another piece of work which treats the audience to regale and rich movie watching experience. The film is based on Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky’s 1848 short story ‘White Nights’. Saawariya is the story of a young boy Raj (Ranbir Kapoor) who is a dreamer, poet and enjoys beauty in all its form. One day he lands up in a dreamy land, probably hard to find in reality. Raj one day sees Sakina (Sonam Kapoor) standing on the bridge. Mystery surrounds Sakina and this is what attracts Raj to her. He tries to become friends with Sakina and is successful in doing so. Raj falls in love with Sakina but is unable to tell her. But when he finally decided to confess his feeling for Sakina, he is faced with a harsh truth.
Saawariya ReviewSakina tells him about her lover, Imaan (Salman Khan) who left a year back but promised to be back on Eid. The bridge plays an important role in the sense that it is here that Iman had left her and also promised to be back on the same bridge. Raj’s world is shattered as he finds the truth too harsh to accept. Imaan doesn’t return on Eid and Raj sees it as an opportunity for himself. He asks Sakina for a chance to prove his love for her. As time passes Sakina begins to harbour feeling for Raj. But just when you think all’s well, Iman comes back. Cliches are common in Bollywood but it is here that Bhansali has a surprise, or a shock, in store for the audience.
Saawariya ReviewThe movie simply talks about love. Raj’s love who is completely in awe of it and is not willing to see another side to it, Love in the heart of Sakina who is willing to wait endlessly for her love to return. There’s one more person in the film, Gulab (Rani Mukherjee) a prostitute for whom the word ‘Love’ is a strict NO-NO. Newcomers Ranbir and Sonam have given fine performances. Ranbir definitely is the next – generation star. Sonam with her girl-next-door looks too has a bright future. Art direction, music and Bhansali’s direction are the plus points of Saawariya. The film’s narrative is very slow but it is visually stimulating. Music director Monty Sharma has belted put some soul – stirring numbers. However, except for a few songs, the songs fail to capture the minds of the listeners. Saawariya is not the normal masala stuff and hence is only for a section of the audience. The one’s who see Bollywood as all dance and drama might not like it. However, the ones who want to watch something different from the normal stuff should definitely go for it.
