The 'Race' for those who were looking for a tashni movie, facing disappointment in the wake of a lull at the box office, is somewhat satiated. The most anticipated and hyped film of 2008- 'Tashan' hit the box office this week and somehow managed to get a few house full shows in its opening week. Yet another big banner movie from Yash Raj that boasts of a heavy star cast, enough to carry off its weak execution. The music score that has found favour with the public, is composed by today’s leading music director-duo Vishal and Shekhar with some of the tashniest tunes to hum along. Not to mention the Bhojpuri tadka that will surely find flavor with the North and East Indians.
Even before its release, 'Tashan' has been in news for a few weeks for many of reasons. It is a story of some Desi's who look no less than a Hollywood actor or actress when it comes to style. ‘The’ Saif Ali Khan (as mentioned in the numberings) plays a role of a call center executive 'Jimmy' who speaks English, eats English and sleeps English. Girls are his passion and he dreams of opening an all-girl call centre. Post 'Race', Saif's acting graph has soared and expectations run high on him now. Saif's acting may fit the character, but may not earn him lauds or laurels.

The better-better half or one-fourth, Kareena Kapoor alias Pooja Singh sizzles the screen with her new found lean figure. She plays a dubious girl, similar to that of Sharon stone in Basic Instict, who knows how to use men to her advantage. Pooja is absolutely tashni in her own way with her curve-less look, but a chunk of audience may not find her ultra slim, anorexic look very attractive.
Now comes the turn of bollywood's golden star and one of the tashniest character of the film. Yes, we are talking about our Bhaiya Ji alias Lakhan Singh Ballebaaj aka ‘The Anil Kapoor’. Kanpuriya Bhaiya ji is a multi millionaire don who wants to learn English for which he hires Saif with the help of Kareena. But she dupes both Bhaiya ji and Saif and flees with his money. The movie now revolves around finding Pooja and Bhaiyaji’s money.

Paving way for one of the most awaited character of the movie, the Kareena angle plays an important role. 'The Akshay Kumar' plays a recovery agent or yet another aspiring don from Kanpur. Bachchan Pandey makes an emphatic entry in his own style which leaves the audience laughing and asking for more. He was handed over the mission recovery with Saif and Kareena. Kareena characteristically starts flirting with Bachchan only to find that Bachchan is her teenage love interest. And if you think its the end of the silly twists, here come another one when Pooja confesses to be a criminal looking for revenge for his father's death who was killed by Bhaiya ji.
The weak story line and umpteen action scenes gives more of a more of a Rajnikant-film-feel than an Hollywood action flick. Although the locations of Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Kerala and Greece add to the beauty quotient of the film. Dialogues are as typical as Akshay and Anil Kapoor. Music is already rocking the nation especially the numbers 'White white face Dekhe' and 'Dil Hara'. Well if have to rate it, it would not gain a whisker more than average points. And even the critics may not have much job to do, as there is nothing much in the movie to be reviewed about. If you have two hours and 40 minutes, you can as well go for this mindless entertainment with an action overdose along with drama, music and of course…TASHAN |
