Gautam Ghose: Won 13 National Awards but this time it seems he has completely lost the track. Writer, editor, cinematographer and music composer Ghose has thrown some stormy brain teaser to the audience, this time, through his Yatra, which instead of provoking your thought process leads you to the corner chemist for some head-ache relief. In Yatra, Ghose a 1970 avant grade, endeavoring pluralistic realism in celluloid then, has meddled with the storyline in morphing it in the celluloid which otherwise seems to be perfect literature. One sways into swamps of paradox as the story passes. The lead character Dashrath Jogelkar -- a writer portrayed by Nana Patekar, who does not seem to be protagonist of the story, has a pre-conceived notion that he can change the society even though he is unable to change his own children who have never read any of his books. Reason?
They are written in Hindi. Dasrath Joglekar travels to Delhi from Hyderabad to receive a prestigious literary award for his masterpiece Janaza. In the train he meets meets Mohan played by Nakul Vaid who is a big time fan of Joglekar's works. Now starts their ride in the memory lane which smoothers with all the nuances of imaginations. Perhaps, the main character of the novel -- Lajvanti portrayed by Rekha was the protagonist of the story. However, it is my own perception with limited perspective. Coming back to the story, after the award ceremony in New Delhi, Dasrath disappears from the motel. Now the story enters into a wonderland, where facts merge with the fiction.
All of a sudden, Joglekar discovers himself in a ‘galli’ where people throng in to enjoy Lijvanti's mujra. However, Joglkar without much astonishment witnesses a paradigm shift in the galli, which is totally different from what was crafted in his novel. Lajvanti has become Lisa, presenting popular film songs to entertain a new clientele. Meanwhile, Dasrath's sudden visit also surprises Lajvanti. Storyline after the interval was even more bizarre. Joglekra's demise, Lajvanti's attempt to hide the body was all as confusing as rocket science. The effort to edify the synergy between an old notion and a modern globalised fervency has culminated into a story of mentally ill person who camouflaged into the labyrinth of his own thought process. As for Rekha, she was seen in dancing mode all through the movie with several layers of facial make up to hide her age lines. Rekha jee, you can't go against the nature. However, the surreal semi-autobiography has some sizzling numbers. Songs are found authentic and deeply related to the storyline even if the director is not. Moreover, Nana Patekar was not at all looking like a writer. His monotonous image of insane throwing satirical comments all around throughout his 15-20 years long career could not be changed by Ghose. Dada, memory of Nasiruddin, Shabana Azmi starrer Paar is still fresh. We anticipate some more of the same kind.
