Murthy is the sole director of the board of DBS Bank of Singapore which is the largest bank in the country owned by its government. He is the director of the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India and is an important member of the council of Prime Minister that works for trade and industry. Murthy is also present in the Board of Members of NDTV in India. He acts as an IT advisor for several Asian countries.

He received the 'ET Businessperson Of The Year Award' in the year 2000-2001, 'Max Schmidheiny Award' in the year 2001, 'JRD Tata Corporate Leadership Award' for the year1996 to1997, 'Distinguished Alumni Award' in the year 1998 by IIT Kanpur. He was the first person in India to receive the Indo-French Forum Medal in the year 2003 by the Indo-French Forum for his outstanding contribution to the promotion of the Indo-French relations. He has been named the 'Businessman of the Year 1999' by Business India. He was chosen as the Top Entrepreneur of the Year 1999 and one of the 'The Stars of Asia' for continuous three years in 1998, 1999 and 2000 by Business Week.
