Mahendra Singh Dhoni An Athletic physique, handsome rugged looks, smart tresses, 6 feet, 2 inches tall and a killing smile. No we are not talking about Mr. India or any actor. These adjectives describe today's youth icon- Mahendra Singh Dhoni. A small town boy, Dhoni has today made a name for himself. Originally from Uttaranchal, his family shifted to Ranchi. Dhoni completed his schooling from ranchi & was an active member of the school sports team. He represented the district and his club in badminton and football. Alongside, Dhoni played the role of a goalkeeper in his football team. No wonder he later donned the gloves when selected to play cricket for a local club. He impressed one and all with his wicket keeping, which fetched him a place in the Vinoo Mankad under-16 championship.
After an impressive performance in the Deodhar and Duleep Trophy games he came into the limelight and was chosen for India 'A's' tour to Kenya. Mahi grabbed the opportunity with both hands putting on display his batting skills. An aggressive hitter of the ball, Dhoni made his presence felt by hitting two centuries against Pakistan A and contributed immensely in Team India’s victory. His gritty game also got him man of the series trophy. |

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was inducted into Team India at a time when a wicketkeeper-batsman was a rarity in the country. BCCI's prayers were finally answered. The team after a long time found a wicket keeper who could also bat. However, Dhoni's first brush with the international scene was not very fruitful. He had a nightmarish debut when he got out on the very first ball for a duck. But, luck truly favours the brave and Dhoni proved it in only his fifth one dayer. He fired on all cylinders to score a scintillating 148 runs against Pakistan at Vishakapatnam in 2005. He followed it up with many fine performances before setting a new record in no time. He launched a quick 183 against Sri Lanka at Jaipur to become the highest scorer in the second innings. In the process he also broke Adam Gilchrist's record to become the first wicket keeper to score the most runs in a one day match.
Dhoni has a career strike rate of 98.79 along with an average of 47.66 which is the highest for any wicket keeper in one day internationals. He also held the top spot in ODI batsman rankings for some time. His popularity among young boys and girls can also be attributed to the fact that he talks in their language. The fast paced game that Dhoni plays -fast, furious and exciting. Each sixer of his is cheered and each shot applauded. Every time he holds the bat, he is expected to send the ball out of the stadium. |

His game is not the only area to have attracted attention. Dhoni is today an inspiration for the youth. He was aptly named as youth icon by a popular TV Channel in 2006. His fan following and popularity can be measured by the fact that it was a popular award, i.e. voted for by the people. He walks the ramp, dances in music videos, and participates in charity programmes. Kids love him, girls are crazy after him and moms adore him. The public throngs the street, stadium and even salons whenever news of Dhoni being anywhere seeps in.
His is a story of a small town boy achieving his dreams. An inspiration for many, hope his journey and dream doesn't end here and goes on for long.
