Khushwant Singh
A columnist, novelist and an eminent journalist, Khuswant Singh is known all over the world for his acid wit and sense of humor that he induces in his writing. Born in the year 1915 in Hadali, now a part of Pakistan, Singh has produced several important novels and articles which have earned huge acclamation from the readers and critics. Khuswant Singh graduated from the Government College in Lahore and studied law from the King's College London deviating from his family profession of building. The time he was practicing as a lawyer in High Court, Lahore the partition in the year 1947 played an important role in shaping his career as an author. Reflection of the violence and massacre he witnessed during the period are explicit in several of his novels. He worked as a journalist for two eminent newspapers of the country 'The National Herald' and the 'Hindustan Times'. He joined the Indian Ministry of External Affairs in the year1947 and All India Radio in the year 1951 as a journalist. He was also the member of Rajya Sabha from the year 1980 to 1986. Singh was the proprietor of the magazine known by the name of 'Yojna' and was its editor from the year 1951 to 1953.

| A historian, political reviewer, intent observer and social critic, Khuswant Singh has emerged to be an important figure in the Indian literature. Some of the popular and important novels written by him are
'Train to Pakistan' published in the year 1956 which is very famous for the representation of its subject, the partition of India and Pakistan. A film has also been made based on the novel. 'Delhi', 'The company of women', 'Uncertain Liaisons; Sex, Strife and Togetherness in Urban India', 'Truth, Love and a Little Malice', 'The End of India' are the few of his numerous popular works. The history of the Sikhs published in two-volumes written by him is also immensely popular with the readers. For his honest representation of the subject and its manifestation he is often referred to as a "humorous writer and incorrigible believer in human goodness with a devil-may-care attitude and a courageous mind."
He has received several awards and accolades for his unparalleled contribution to the Indian literature. He has been awarded 'Padma Bhushan' in the year 1974 for his outstanding contribution to the country. 'Padma Vibhushan' in the year 2007 by the Indian government, 'Honest Man of the Year Award' in the year 2000 by Sulabh International Social Service Organization for his brilliant impeccable writing and 'Punjab Rattan' by the Government of Punjab in the year 2006 are the awards achieved by him.
One of the most important post colonial authors, Khuswant Singh has come a long way to gather a wide array of experiences which are reflected in his writings. Still going strong, the country eagerly awaits his forthcoming masterpieces.
