Salman Rushdie One of the legendary writers of the present time, Salman Rushdie has produced some of the greatest works of literature the world has today. Born in the year 1947 in a Muslim family living in Mumbai, Rushdie has always been artistic and imaginative since his childhood. After finishing his school in Mumbai he went off to England to pursue his further studies in the King's College in Cambridge with history as his main subject. During his stay there he joined a theater group known by the name of 'Cambridge Footlights theater company' for his interest in performing arts. In the year 1964 he accompanied his family back to Pakistan and worked in television for a brief period of time. Realizing that England is the place where he can attain his goal he went back there to work as a copywriter in an advertisement agency. Married to Padma Laxmi presently he is settled in the United Kingdom.
In the year 1975 he published his first novel 'Grimus'. His second novel named 'Midnight's Children' published in the year 1981 however marked the beginning of his glorious career. The book was acclaimed by the critics and readers all over the world and won him several awards. A social critic and a satirist, his understanding of the world and its ways are explicitly reflected in his works. He has never stepped back from voicing his thoughts and judgments on issues which he thought needed to be brought into the limelight. He has authored several books including his most controversial work 'The
Satanic Verses'. 'Shame', 'The Jaguar Smile', 'Haroun and the Sea of Stories', 'In Good Faith', 'Imaginary Homelands: Essays and Criticism 1981-1991', 'The Moor's Last Sigh', 'The Vintage Book of Indian Writing', 'The Ground Beneath Her Feet', 'Fury', 'Step Across This Line: Collected Non-fiction 1992-2002', 'Shalimar The Clown', 'Careless Masters' and 'Parallelville' are some of the numerous books written by him which was acclaimed all over the world.

| Besides writing he also shares his passion for painting and sculpting. He was also seen in a guest appearance in the film 'Bridget Jones's Diary' in the year 2001. He was also the guest anchor of the talk show 'The Charlie Rose Show' where he interviewed the much talked about filmmaker Deepa Mehta on her film 'Water'.
He has received several awards and accolades for some of the numerous books he has authored. He has received the 'Arts Council Writers' Award' in the year 1981. His legendary book 'Midnight's Children' has won many awards that include the 'Booker Prize for Fiction' in the year 1981, 'English-Speaking Union Award' in the year 1981, 'James Tait Black Memorial Prize' for fiction in the year 1981 and the 'Booker of Bookers' award in the year1993 given out to celebrate 25 glorious years of the Booker Prize for Fiction. His book 'Shame' has received the awards 'Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger' in France in the year 1984 and was shortlisted for the 'Booker Prize for Fiction' award. His most controversial book 'The Satanic Verses' bagged some eminent awards like the 'Whitbread Novel Award' in the year 1988, 'German Author of the Year' in 1988 and was shortlisted for the 'Booker Prize for Fiction' in the year 1988. He has won the 'Kurt Tucholsky Prize' in Sweden in the year 1992, the 'Austrian State Prize for European Literature' in 1993, 'Prix Colette' in 1993 in Switzerland, 'Aristeion Literary Prize' in1996, 'Mantova Literary Prize' in the year1997 in Italy, 'Budapest Grand Prize for Literature', Hungary in the year1998 and the 'Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres', France in1999. His book the 'The Moor's Last Sigh' won several awards that include the 'British Book Awards Author of the Year' in the year 1995, the 'Whitbread Novel Award' in 1995 and was nominated for the 'Booker Prize for Fiction' in the year1995. His latest book 'Shalimar The Clown' was shortlisted for three major awards the
'Whitbread Novel Award' in the year 2005, the ' Commonwealth Writers Prize' in 2006 and the 'International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award' in 2007. His book for children 'Haroun and the Sea of Stories' was awarded the 'Writers' Guild Award for best Children's Book' in the year1992. He has been named the 'KBE' in the year 2007.
An author who is an expert in weaving stories for children and is considered to be the master of criticism, drama, essays, fiction, non-fiction, short stories and travelogues, Salman Rushdie is still going strong to give his best to the readers.
