Location:
Kanyakumari is a town located in the district of Kanyakumari in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Situated in the southernmost part of the country the town is also famous by the name of Cape Comorin. The point of confluence of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal into the Indian ocean, the region is a proud owner of the vast stretches of beaches and the crystal clear blue water of the sea. The hills of the Western Ghats grace the interior part of the town. Immensely popular with the tourists from all over the world, the place is well known for the temples and 'ashrams' located at the region.

The Trivandrum international Airport is the nearest airport to Kanyakumari, located at the distance of 80 kilometers from the town. Several domestic and international flights connect this airport to the rest of the country and various parts of the world.

The nearest railway station to Kanyakumari is the Kanyakumari railway station that is located at the distance of 1 kilometer from the beach of Kanyakumari. The station is connected to major cities of the country by numerous trains.

History of Kanyakumari:
The town of Kanyakumari has attained its name from the Kanyakumari temple or the Kumari Amman situated in the town. The temple worships Kanya Devi, the incarnation of Goddess Parvati. It is believed that Goddess Parvati was supposed to get married to Lord Shiva at this place but as he failed to turn up on the wedding day, the Goddess vowed lifelong virginity.

According to another legend, Kanyakumari is the piece of land that Lord Hanuman dropped while carrying the hill having the medicinal herb known popularly by the name of Mrita Sanjivani to Lanka.

Kanyakumari emerged to be an important center for trade and commerce during the 8th century. It has a civilization and culture dating back to hundreds of years.

Places to see in Kanyakumari:
Kanyakumari Temple: located at the shore in Kanyakumari, it is a temple that worships the virgin Goddess Devi Kanya, the incarnation of Goddess Parvati. The major attraction of the temple is the diamond nose stud whose shine can be seen far off from the sea. The shrine is visited by hundreds of pilgrims throughout the year.

Vivekananda Memorial: located at the distance of 500 kilometers from the shore, the Vivekananda Memorial is located on one of the two rocks situated in the sea. Built in the year 1970, the rock is believed to be the place where Swami Vivekananda, one of the greatest philosophers of all time meditated and gained wisdom. The memorial is famous for its brilliant architecture. The adjoining meditation hall is also popular with the tourists.

Gandhi Memorial: it is the spot where the pot containing the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi was kept for public showing before submerging it into the sea. The memorial was designed on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. It is the spot where the first rays of the sun fall in Kanyakumari.

Thiruvalluvar Statue: it is a statue of Saint Thiruvalluvar, the famous author, situated on the rock adjacent to the Vivekananda rock.

Government Museum: it is a museum in Kanyakumari that has the collection of miscellaneous things like rare and old coins, sculptures made of bronze and metals, whalebones, tribal accessories, woodcarvings and various other things.

The Sangam: it is the confluence where the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea merge. It is the place where the tourists take bath and enjoy themselves playing around in the waves.

The Lighthouse: located in Kanyakumari, it is the place from where one can have the top view of the beautiful town.
