The winter season during the months of September to March is the best time to visit Khajuraho.

History of Khajuraho:
The abode of fascinating temples, Khajuraho has lots of myths and legends woven around it. It is believed that Khajuraho temples were built by the Chandelas, one of the famous dynasties reigning in Madhya Pradesh sometime around 950 to1050 A.D.

According to the most popular legend, the temples were constructed by Chandravarman, the founder of the Chandela dynasty. It is believed that in his dream he was suggested by his mother to build a temple with the representations of human desires and their futility.

As per the other legend goes, Khajuraho temples and the passionate sculptures on them were created to expose the young men to the truth of creation, who had led their boyhood in 'brahmachajya'.

An another theory says that the amorous sculptures on the temples are to convey that one must leave all his earthly desires outside before entering the temple.
Places to see in Khajuraho:
An ode to a woman, the Khajuraho temples are poetries externalizing the beauty of innocuous yet coquettish, fragile yet bold creation of God. Women have been shown in various postures and activities either going through their daily chores or making love to their beloved. The Khajuraho temples are categorized into three distinct geographical divisions which are eastern, western and southern. The visual treat in Khajuraho includes the following:

Kandariya Mahadeo: the largest temple in Khajuraho, it comprises around 900 sculptures, six compartments, the main hall, a portico, vestibule, sanctum and an ambulatory. Carvings of Gods, Goddesses and heavenly maidens adorn the pillars, ceiling and the gateway to the temple. The sensuous and animated statues are the finest instances of artistic brilliance.

Chaunsat Yogini: it is the oldest temple in Khajuraho made up of granite stone that worships Goddess Kali. Carvings and sculptures of the Goddess can be seen all around in the temple.

Chitragupta Temple: worshiping Sun God, the temple has a five feet high statue of the deity on his chariot. Carvings representing court activities and festivities adorn the walls and ceiling of the temple.

Vishwanath Temple: dedicated to Lord Brahma, the temple is well known for the statue of the two carved lions at the entrance. Elephants and bulls are the other animals symbolizing power that are engraved on surface of the temple.

Lakshamana Temple: enshrining Lord Vishnu and his incarnations, the temple excels in its architectural brilliance. Brahma, Shiva and Lakshmi are the other deities worshiped at the temple.

Matangeshwara Temple: worshiping Lord Shiva, this temple is famous for the eight feet high Shivalinga. The religious rituals performed at the temple are worth witnessing for the grandeur with which they are executed.

Parsavanatha Temple: dedicated to Lord Parsavanath, it is the biggest Jain temple in the region. Carvings depicting Goddesses in their various moods are the catch of this temple.

Ghantai Temple: a Jain temple, the structure depicts various legends in the rich carvings on the walls and pillars of the temple. The sculpture of the Jain Goddess on Garura is well known for its detailed carvings.

Adinatha Temple: dedicated to Adinatha, a Jain saint, the temple has rich and intricate sculptures of yakshis.

Chaturbhuj Temple: dedicated to Lord Vishnu the temple has an immense image of the God having detailed carvings.

Duladeo Temple: it is a Shiva temple that is adorned with the amative images and sculptures. The heavenly maidens and their acts of passion are the best possible instances of brilliant artistry.

Things to do in Khajuraho:
Offer prayers to the deities, witness the 'aarti' at the Shiva temple, fishing at the Ranguan and Benisagar lake, boating in the Benisagar lake, go for the excursions to the tourist spots in the region.
Shopping in Khajuraho:
Textiles, saris, replicas of the sculptures of the temple, miniatures of Shivalingas and other deities are the things to look for in the shops of Khajuraho. Gole Market, Oswal Complex and the Government emporiums are the places to go for shopping in Khajuraho.
