Dalhousie was established in 1853 by the British and was named after the first Governor General of the country, Lord Dalhousie. With its invigorating air, scenic delight and foliage of palms and oak, this place attracted the British. They brought the land from the Raja of Chamba and formed it into a sanatorium and hill resort. In 1853, Bakrota, Kathlog, Tehra and Portreyn were given to the British against a yearly payment to Chamba State of Rs 2000. It was in 1866 that the fifth plateau of Balun was taken for the cantonment. After Independence, Dalhousie slowly raised its status to a sedate hill station.
