.jpg) The name Darjeeling is said to have been derived from the Tibetan word Dorje Ling, meaning the Place of the Thunderbolt. The Maharaja of Sikkim used to counter frequent threats from Nepali Gurkhas who were finally crushed with the help of the East India Company. Subsequent developments led the East India Company to acquire a small strip in the south of the Sikkim Himalayas for the purpose of a sanitarium and an outpost of strategic importance on the northern frontier of India in1835. Under the aegis of the British, the region developed into a beautiful hill station. Tea estates sprung up in all parts and were tended to by the Nepali laborers. Early 1900 saw Darjeeling becoming the summer residence of the Bengal government until the Indian Independence in 1947.

| For such a small region, the hill station of Darjeeling sure packs a punch in its tourist attractions. A stroll through the Chowrastha or the Mall, that takes you the Observatory Hill where the Sacred Mahakal temple is situated is de rigeur. Stunning views of the Kanchenjunga Mountain Range just add to the experience.
If you can't get enough of the picturesque mountain range, visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute that commands a magnificent view of Kanchenjunga massif, which was established after the conquest of the Everest in 1954. The Institute also houses the Everest Museum that is famous for its unique collection of mountaineering equipment and findings.
For the religious minded (and lovers of architecture, of course), the Ghoom Monastery, Yiga Choeling Monastery and the Dhirdham Temple are a must visit. The Dhirdham Temple is similar in architecture to the famous Pahupatinath Temple of Nepal.
And, yes, do see the spectacular sunrise from Tiger Hill, slowly arising from the east and drenching the snow-capped Mt. Kanchenjunga in its myriad hues, even if it means getting up early in the morning during your vacation. It's worth it.
