This utopian paradise is also the capital of the tiny Indian state of Sikkim in the northeast and is fast emerging as a destination of choice for tourists in India. With an inherent old worldly charm and a multicultural fabric to boot, Gangtok is an experience beyond words. It must be noted that foreign tourists need to obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) in addition to an Indian visa if they intend to visit Sikkim. These permits can be obtained from all Indian missions and tourism offices apart from the Sikkim tourist offices in Calcutta and Siliguri. For those interested in exploring the interior regions, a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) or a Protected Area Permit (PAP) should be obtained at the police check post or the Department of Tourism in Gangtok.

History of Gangtok:
There is very little information on the early history of Gangtok with the earliest records dating back to 1716 AD when the hermitic Gangtok monastery was constructed. Gangtok mainly existed as a small hamlet till the construction of the Enchey Monastery in 1840 made it a popular pilgrimage center. It later became a major stopover point on the Tibet - India route during the days of the British. In 1894 the capital of Sikkim was shifted from Tumlong to Gangtok thus pulling it into the limelight.
