During our recent trip to this fascinating city, we decided to hire a private vehicle, as we wanted to savor the place to its maximum and also as it allowed us to travel at our own discretion. We had kept three days for the trip to Jaipur but still we were not sure whether we would be able to see the entire city or not. As we were visiting Jaipur in the month of June, we were sure that we would have to face harsh rays of sun, as weather during this time of year is the hottest. However, when we started from Delhi, the weather seemed to be welcoming us, as there were small pieces of clouds on the sky and a cool breeze that continued till we reached the Pink City. |

| During our journey, we came across a large number of mountains that form the famous Aravali ranges and villages where we could see the true spirit of Rajasthan. Beautiful peasant women clad in the most traditional ghagra and choli and covered with heavy jewelry articles from head to toe could easily be seen doing household chores in the villages located on both sides of the 270 kms long Delhi Jaipur highway. The villages and townships that fell on our road to Jaipur had the real essence of Rajasthan that is legendary for its rich culture. Born and brought up in cosmopolitan cities we were not familiar with the culture of rural India and therefore the lifestyle of these villages seemed fascinating to us. Darkness was enveloping the environs when we reached the Pink City and therefore we decided to relax and visit Bapu Bazaar located nearby.

| The following morning we decided to start our expedition by visiting the historical monuments located within the city. Established somewhere in the 18th century, the city is dotted with historical monuments that not only are a marvel of Rajputana architecture but also display the intellect of those brave Rajput warriors whose chivalrous tales are still narrated to the young generation. The first monument we visited was the famous Hawa Mahal known majorly for its ventilation through 365 tiny windows, this palace served as a place from where the women of the royal family looked and enjoyed public processions and functions. Although the palace is not maintained extremely well, it is still remarkable. The second on our list was City Palace that served as the residence of the rulers of Jaipur and is still owned by H.H. Bhawani Singh. The museums, the architecture and the property of City Palace are absolutely spectacular. We also visited Jantar Mantar that is simply out of this world. It was amazing to imagine how the intellect of Sawai Jai Singh II worked and he constructed an observatory like this. The most accurate calculation of time, position of stars and prediction of rains following simple techniques is absolutely marvelous. After going to the famous Albert hall that was constructed in the year 1876 by Sawai Pratap Singh we decided to return to the hotel as we were taken by the toll of scorching summer heat. |

However again in the evening, we gathered some courage and again started off with our expedition as we had only a couple of days more to spend in Jaipur. Initially we headed towards Galtaji that is a famous temple in the outskirts of the city. The journey to the temple was beguiling and we were absolutely amazed to see the landscapes and the hillocks that offered a panoramic sight. The temple area is full of religious fervor and you feel the purity of the environment as you step in the property. Anyone would be delighted to step in this temple that is surrounded by hillocks on all sides and seems to be a naturally cosseted place. Our day was concluded with a delightful visit to Choki Dhani- an ethnic village resort. It seemed as we have suddenly landed in a remote village of Rajasthan. Everything around was so ethnic, so beautiful that we were simply awestruck. We rejoiced with various activities and had a sumptuous dinner comprising of the local cuisine there. |

| The second day of our trip comprised of our visit to places like Gaitore, Zoological Garden, Birla Temple, Dolls museum and Kanak Vrindavan Gardens. Most of these places are maintained extremely well and display beauty but it was sad to see that the historically important places like Gaitore that are the reminiscent of the brave Rajput rulers of Jaipur have been ignored by the government. Beautiful marble cenotaphs of the erstwhile rulers have simply been forgotten. As we were not too tired after visiting these places, we decided to do some shopping in the evening. As the state is known for its handicrafts we simply freaked out with shopping and ended up spending most of our money. Nevertheless, we were richer by beautiful fabrics like Bandhej and Sanganeri suits and Kota Doria saris, beautiful trinkets and jootis (slip on shoes made of camel skin).

The famous forts of the Pink City were on our itinerary for the third and final day of our stay in the city. We started with a trip to Amer fort that served as the capital of the Kachchwaha clan of Rajputs before Jaipur was founded. Stunning Sheesh Mahal was one feature of the fort that appealed the most to my eyes. Among other attractions of the fort, elephant ride was the most alluring. Second fort that we visited was Nahargarh that was constructed for military purposes and the major highlight of which are the palaces of the women of the royal family. Jaigarh, the biggest of the three was full of antiques. World's largest cannon, colossal water tanks and old photographs highlight the fort that is located at the highest altitude and was mainly for the military outfits. The fort also served as a shelter for the royal family during the time of war in the bygone era. Captivated by the enormity of the forts of the pink city, we returned to the hotel in the evening imagining how the people in that departed epoch managed to build such colossal buildings.
Captivated by the aura of the city that has beautifully been painted pink all over, we set off for the rest of the tour. The memories of our trip to Jaipur had encouraged us enough to remain pepped up for the rest of the trip.
