History of Kullu:

Hidden from the rest of the world, Kullu valley till date remains an unexplored treasure. In the olden days, Kullu valley was also known as 'Kulantapitha' meaning the end of hospitable world. The Hindu rulers confined their stay in the upper Beas region, near Manali. Initially Kullu was a forest, so it barred the smooth flow of trade between Central Asia and Southern region. In the period of Raja Jagat Singh, Kullu district gained importance. The mighty ruler installed the idol of Lord Raghunathji especially brought from Ayodhya. The king and his successors regarded themselves as mere regents of Lord Raghunathji. The deity is of great significance as the Dusshera festival is held in its name.
Places to see in Kullu:
Raghunath Temple is located at a distance of only one kilometer from Kullu valley. The Temple has a legend attached to it. It is said that to absolve the evil effect of the curse of a Brahmin Durga Dutt, Raja Jagat Singh used charanamrit of the idol for Forty-two days. In 1660 the temple was constructed with the commingling of Pahari and Pyramid style. Temple priests perform puja (offer prayers) five times a day.

Dhalpur Ground is the only venue for cultural exchange programmes, processions and mass celebrations. Dusshera is celebrated every year at Dhalpur Ground. Kala Kendra at Dhalpur arranges many functions throughout the year. Especially during Dusshera Dhalpur becomes a much sought after destination. The taxi stand at Dhalpur also provides vehicles on hire.

Bajaura is a Research Station built by Punjab Agriculture University. Later on it came to be known as Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University. Here work on improving the quality of seeds, crops and increasing productivity is carried on.

Jagannathi Devi Temple is also known as Bekhli Temple. The temple is at a stiff climb of around one and a half to two hours but these days the local buses make it easy to access. It offers a breathtaking view of the valley drenched by the clear and bickering waters of the Beas River.

Vaishno Devi is located on Manali road. Initially it was a small temple, now the temple stands as a majestic work of art. The footprints of Ram are carefully preserved in the Temple. Besides goddess Durga's idol enshrined in the cave, the temple houses the idols of Sai Baba, Lord Krishna, Lord Ram and Goddesses Sita and Radha. Just on the opposite side of the road the temple has an eating hall adjoining the River Beas.

Bijli Mahadev is set on a spur at a height of 2460 meters. The legend says that every year at the lightning struck on particular days, the Shivlinga shatters because of its 60 feet high staff. The story seems to be unbelievable but is true. It is also said that the lightning is nothing but the divine blessings on the temple.
