Moreover, heavy snowfall blocks the Rohtang and Zoji La passes in the winter months. Ladakh is the last Shangri La of the modern world. Its unexplored forests, natural trekking trails and rich culture has become a draw for many tourists. The Tourism Department has also started promoting tourism to this state. The people of Ladakh are mainly Buddhists, while a significant minority is Muslim. They are devoutly religious, and very welcoming towards guests.
History of Ladakh:
Ladakh has a fascinating history that belies its peaceful, almost sleepy present situation. Once an independent kingdom, Ladakh was annexed by the Dogra king of neighboring Jammu in 1834. Later, when the British gave the Dogras control over the Kashmir Valley, the territories of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir came under one ruler.
