India pachmarhi vacationBrilliant sunsets and deep ravines create dramatic natural panoramas - as you tour historic Pachmarhi nestled on the Mahadeo Range in the midst of Satpura ranges in Madhya Pradesh. Dazzling green Pachmarhi is famous for its scenic low-lying Satpura ranges that envelop you in peace and soothing calm as you let your eyes wander over untouched natural grandeur, that though is breathtaking, has a unique unobtrusive quality that charms.

Perched at a height of 1,067 meters above the sea level, Pachmarhi is a peaceful hill retreat and a rock climber's paradise. Sun soaked green hills scattered with colonial homes remind you of an era gone by as you spot a deer herd while trekking through an undulating expanse.

Silver hill brooks gurgle past dense green undergrowths as you celebrate warm Pachmarhi i.e. one of the most popular hill stations in Madhya Pradesh, India. Discovered by a British army man, Captain Forsyth, this exotic saucer-shaped valley offers the perfect panacea to your peace-starved senses. Pachmarhi served as a sanatorium in the days of the Raj and has healed many a tortured soul with its enigmatic beauty and characteristic quietude.

Be ready to walk for miles on a Pachmarhi tour. Marvel at the scenic grandeur that greets you. Flashes of red sandstone hills form an enchanting contrast with yellow scrubs and deep emerald forests. Chance upon a waterfall and watch sunrays dance with glittering water cascades as you rejuvenate on a Pachmarhi tour.

A great place to enjoy hill hikes, exotic green Pachmarhi is a haven of tranquility that soaks your spirit in peace. Tour ancient hill caves; admire cave paintings that trace their origin to thousands of years ago. Visit mythologically significant nature spots that seem encased in an incredible time warp on a Pachmarhi tour.

Referred to as the Queen of Satpuras, enchanting Pachmarhi invites you into its untouched locales that reverberate with natural music, enchanting wildlife treasures and ethnic cultural heritage.

History of Pachmarhi :
Historically very significant, picture-postcard Pachmarhi gets its name from the terms 'Panch' - i.e. five and 'Marhi' that literally means caves. It is believed that the Pandavas from the great Indian epic Mahabharata stayed in these serene hills while they were in exile. Archaeologists believe that that history of Pachmarhi dates back to more than 10, 000 years ago. The caves of Pachmari exhibit valuable treasures of art etched in vibrant hues by those who cared to paint them during their leisure hours more than 500 to 600 years ago.

Pachmarhi's modern historical background is clearer. Pachmarhi was discovered as a summer hill retreat when a British soldier, Captain Forsyth was sent with a group of soldiers deep into the Satpura forests to quell a mutiny headed by the brave Rani Laxmi Bai - a great freedom fighter who achieved martyrdom while fighting for India's Independence.

After several years when Forsyth achieved a raise in rank he took initiatives to convert this lesser known forest beauty into a sanatorium for rejuvenation of tired souls. A cantonment area developed in Pachmarhi and several colonial buildings, bungalows and churches were constructed. Thus - Pachmarhi the hill station as it exists today was born.

Places to see in Pachmarhi:
The only hill retreat in Central India - tranquil Pachmarhi is an open-air cultural and natural treasure trove. Wind crafted hill caves, man-created cave paintings, wildernesses agog with rare animals and tribal fantasies that have ruled the Queen of Satpuras for centuries, welcome you to come and explore their well-guarded secrets.

Be amazed at the profusion of places to visit in Pachmarhi - that is but a tiny hill retreat crowning the low-key Satpura hills. A trip to the Dhoopgarh summit late in the evening affords you an opportunity to experience a natural phenomenon that is incomparably fantastic. Watch the Satpura ranges change color from subtle shades of warm yellow to vermilion - an exotic arrangement of sunset hues as you regale the most spectacular sunset ever.

The Apsara Waterfalls and Bee-Falls create a fairy paradise. See silver water gurgle its way down a rocky stretch and accumulate in a green rock pool below on an Apsara waterfall tour and experience indescribable thrill as you scour stone-age rock caves on a tour of the Panch Pandava Caves and Bhrant Neer.

Explore hidden treasures in the Teak forests of Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve that is of immense natural significance as it forms a part of the transition forest area in-between the jungles of East India and West India. Populated with animals such as Rhesus Macaques, wild boars, leopards, tigers, gaur, munjtac deer et al, the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve is a paradise for wildlife adventure freaks. The Priyadarshini Point is a significant Pachmarhi tour destination as it commemorates the historic event of Captain Forsyth having discovered this magical Madhya Pradesh hill retreat. The Jatashankar Cave is of course a must visit. This fascinating mountain cave has an ethnic Shiva lingam within its sanctum and is designed as though the matted locks of Lord Shiva have been integrated to create this natural masterpiece.

The Christ Church and Catholic Church are important remnants of Pachmarhi's 'colonial occupation' days. Have a picnic lunch near Sunder Lund, a crystal rock pool and tour the mythologically significant Handi Khoh, that according to local legend was the abode of a fire breathing serpent, who was conquered by the powerful Lord Shiva.
