Located in the North Eastern part of Rajasthan, Sawai Madhopur is widely acclaimed all across the world for housing Ranthambore National Park. The park has not only helped in building the economy of the city but has also made the appearance of the city prominent on the tourism map of the world. A nascent city as compared to other parts of the state, Sawai Madhopur is a magnet for wildlife tourists from all across the world. During our Rajasthan trip this time, we had decided to spend a couple of days at Sawai Madhopur also. We were told that the prime attraction in the city was only the national park and therefore we chose to spend only two days in the city. As the city is at a short distance from Jaipur and it takes around three hours to reach the city from Jaipur, we decided to move to Sawai Madhopur first and then to other cities listed in our itinerary.

When we left the city of Jaipur in the evening to avoid the heat, we discovered that we were a bit late. As the road connecting Jaipur to Sawai Madhopur is not well made and the last patch does not even have streetlights, it gets difficult to travel after dark. The driver tried to speed up the vehicle but all in vain. However as the weather was pleasant, we were enjoying the trip to some extent. As we moved towards Sawai Madhopur, the cool breeze started cooling the environment and the landscapes started looking more appealing to us. What lay on both sides of the road were green meadows, beautiful landscapes and rustic villages that display the true spirit of the state. On way to Sawai Madhopur, we also saw Vanasthali Deemed University that has of late become an icon in girl education. Just outside the city of Sawai Madhopur we came across beautifully rustic villages that were simply a treat to the eyes. Thatched huts, grazing cattle, mud houses with beautiful paintings done on the outer walls with simple color combinations were simply awesome. |

| When we got to the city, it was already quarter past nine and we headed straightaway to the hotel. We were also impressed by the ambience in the hotel as it had a vast expanse of land covered with sprawling greens. Lush green lawns at the hotel simply filled us with energy and we spent some time taking a stroll on the lush lawns. As we inquired about the forest safari from the hotel authorities, we were informed that the jeeps leave for the forest around six in the morning. |

Next morning we had to literally push ourselves to get ready in time as none of us was willing to get up so early specially after a long journey. Finally we got ready by ten minutes past six and as we reached the hotel gate, we saw that the jeep was ready and was only waiting for us. A foreigner couple was our company in the jeep that took us to the woods of the famous Ranthambore National Park. Although the forest guide was not an expert, we had a good time in the forest. As we entered the forest area, we were welcomed into the intriguing life of flora and fauna through a dancing peacock. The fascinating postures of the peacock dance seemed divine to us. As I had never been to a national park, it was the first time I was seeing the captivating activities of the wildlife in open atmosphere. I desperately wanted to see a tiger that is the hallmark of the Ranthambore National Park. But it seemed as if all the tigers have sworn to escape our vehicle. We wandered in the park for more than three hours but ended up seeing only the footprints of the tiger. Although we came across several beautiful landscapes and meadows but our minds were stuck with spotting the tiger. Finally we concluded our safari without even getting a glimpse of the ferocious mammal that is known to be the hallmark of the park. |

| We returned to the hotel, had our breakfast and were again ready to take off with our tour to the city by visiting the famous temples. Chamatkar Temple, a prominent Jain temple located in the heart of the city was our first destination. The temple has been given this name as a number of miracles mark the establishment of this temple. The devotees also believe that all your desires are fulfilled if you visit this place. Next we went to Kala Gaura Bhairav temple that is among the few temples in the country where Tantrik rituals are practiced. Although the temple has been beautifully constructed by slicing a hillock, it was sad to see that the priests and other attendants at the temple were under the influence of opium. The temple has a wonderful statue of Lord Ganesha. From there we headed to Khandar Fort that is located in the outskirts of the Sawai Madhopur city. Reminiscent of the glorious past, the ruins of this fort are worth a visit.

The second half of our day was dedicated for visiting the famous Ranthambore Fort that has made history of being one of the most impregnable forts in the region. The fort is located in the buffer zone of the national park and you can have the most picturesque view of the park from various parts of the fort. We came across a temple of Lord Ganesha inside the fort that is known throughout the country. The temple houses the idols of Lord Ganesha and his entire family. It is believed that all ceremonies in the family go well if you send an invitation to Lord Ganesha in this temple. Wedding invitations from different parts of the country were piled up inside the temple. We were amazed to know that the main priest reads out all invitations before the idol of Lord Ganesha. The atmosphere was so divine there that for a moment we were also overwhelmed. As we were too tired by the end of the day so we headed straightaway to the hotel and went to bed after dinner.
We had only first half of the next day at our discretion as we had to leave the city in the evening. As we had not visited the shopping areas in the city, we decided to spend the day shopping and getting a feel of the main city. On entering the market area, we realized that the entire city is a lot influenced by the tigers of the national park. An outsider coming to the city will get a number of items resembling a tiger to take back home. You can shop for tiger paintings that look more like a photograph or can take T-shirts and skirts with a print similar to that of tiger skin. For the kids back home one can also shop for baby tigers made of soft material that are clad in proper Rajasthani attires with a traditional turban to complete the look.
The city depicts a true picture of the state that is known for its cultural heritage. We liked the city a lot as being brought up in cosmopolitan cities of the country, we had never observed something traditional so closely. Although the city has changed a bit due to the arrival of tourists from all across the world, still the spirit of the city has beautifully been conserved at Sawai Madhopur.
