History of Srinagar:

This lake was then drained by the sage Kashyap and Goddess Parvati crushed the demon to death with a huge mountain that still exists in the beautiful city of Srinagar. Apart from this mythological history, Srinagar has a vast historical background. The old city of Srinagar was established by the great Mauryan king Ashoka and was named Puranadhisthan. This was the time when Buddhism spread in the Kashmir valley. Later the modern city was built upon the ruins of capital cities of several kings. Srinagar was once the summer capital of the state and was a famous business center of the country. The history of Srinagar also includes several wars between India and Pakistan in which several soldiers and civilians lost their lives. Kashmir continues to face a cross-border terrorism problem and large numbers of army and security forces personnel can be seen on the streets of Srinagar at all times. Tourists are advised not to travel after dark.
Places to see in Srinagar :
Dal Lake: The sizzling Dal Lake is the major landmark of Srinagar. Famous for its Houseboats and Shikaras, Dal Lake has always been the center of attraction for the tourists visiting Srinagar. Enjoy the panoramic views of the mountains surrounding the lake while having a ride in the beautiful shikaras.

Hazaratbal Mosque: Srinagar has one of the oldest mosques called Hazaratbal Mosque. Situated across the Dal Lake, Hazaratbal Mosque is made of white marble. Having a dome and a minaret, this great mosque is known to have the sacred relic, which is a hair of the Prophet Mohammed.

Nagin Lake: : Divided from the Dal Lake, Nagin Lake is often mistaken as a separate lake. Having many causeways, Nagin Lake is very suitable for walkers and bicycle riders. The water pipeline for Srinagar's mains water supply is also placed on one such causeway.

Shankaracharya Hill: Located on the highest hill of Srinagar is the temple of Shankaracharya. Devoted to Lord Shiva, Shankaracharya Temple dates back to 2,500 B.C. Tourists from all over the world come to visit the famous Shankaracharya Temple during their tours to Srinagar.

Mughal Gardens: With its sizzling beauty and calm and serene locales, Kashmir was an all time favorite place of the Mughal emperors.
